Transformations on Hymn of Change

from live ateliers claus by David Rosenboom

/

about

(Yamaha DisklavierTM piano with computer-electronics)
Hymn of Change is a slow gospel waltz inspired by words of Pythagoras—as reported by Ovid—about the nature of change. It has appeared in many forms for various instruments, sometimes including an actor/speaking voice. It also forms the tenth movement of Rosenboom’s twelve-movement piano work Bell Solaris (Twelve Movements for Piano) Transformations of a Theme. Here, the Hymn forms the basis of an improvisation utilizing musical transformation algorithms and a responding Yamaha DisklavierTM piano with computer-electronics. The transformations are extended with real-time analysis and synthesis algorithms, and the interpretation of the score is opened up to enable interacting with them. The compositional model then becomes an instrument for improvisation.
